Notes: Originally written for the Ash from the Sky drabble challenge in [deadjournal.com profile] acropolis. I have a couple different orignal universes in my head. This one, Universe A, is the oldest and has a high fantasy setting. This bit is actually seven drabbles, each from a different character's perspective, focusing on a single event.

~Today Is a Good Day~

Cynthia

Cynthia hadn't been sent to the city to study, but she'd borrowed her ward's books late at night and read—histories, legends, and philosophies. Even a bit of science. So when she looks into the sky and sees a far off rain that's darker than a thunderstorm, she realizes what's happening. The weapon that was only supposed to exist in myth has been found. The elves hadn't been able to use it during the Freedom Wars, but they were now. The legends hadn't contained any information about what to do if the weapon were used; Cynthia decides to see Amelia.

Louise

Louise wipes her brow as she works in the stifling kitchen. The stone walls of the castle keep the heat in, but she hopes they offer some measure of protection as well. She can hear Mark outside practicing, and the sound brings her comfort as she prepares the medicinal herbs for drying. If Sara spoke true, she doubts she can be too prepared.

Knowledge about healing elvish wounds has been lost, and she's glad for old superstitions. She believed, even while her mother dismissed them. Maybe they have a measure of truth; Louise just needs enough to minister her village.

David and Justin

"David? I'm scared. What's going to happen to us? To Louise and Mark? Will it hurt?"

"Shh...."

"No, I won't be quiet! All this stuff's going on, and I can't do anything about it. I have to trust the one person I can't trust—it doesn't matter how many times you say it's in the past, I still don't like her—so it's hardly surprising that I'm scared. And I'm nervous. And I'm—"

"I shouldn't have dismissed what you were saying."

"I know you didn't mean it like that, but—"

David hugs Justin, offering physical comfort since his words failed.

Johnny

Johnny hurts; his knee's been oozing more than normal lately. He saw Louise gathering herbs, but they won't help. Everyone in the castle's all worked up about something, even if he won't see whatever it is.

He'll be dead.

By the way Louise is acting, the Black Woman will be coming for more than a few of them. He'll just be beating the crowd. He sees black rain on the horizon and judges that death won't be pleasant for the others. Meaning his own death will be the only thing in his life that wasn't horrible. Johnny closes his eyes.

Sara

Sara waits for the right moment. Even if her plan works, people are going to get hurt. But that's better than the alternative, which is where everyone gets hurt, so she must go through with the plan. The past three years have been leading to this, her crouching behind a bush and watching. In front of her, Kora is creating enough deadly ash to coat the world. She's already released the first batch into the skies, letting her grunts keep it aloft long enough to spread. Sara sees the ash head towards her city and hopes everyone has taken cover.

Mark

Mark practices against an invisible enemy. As his sword arcs through the air, he imagines one of the elves before him. This time, they don't even have the courage to face the humans in battle; instead they prefer to send an enemy he can't fight. How can he protect anyone when there is no one to fight?

His chest heaves from exertion. Something covers the sun, casting his home in shadow. It is the cloud Sara warned him about. Mark doesn't see the speck that floats down, but it lands on his arm, singeing the skin. The enemy has arrived.

Kora

Kora finishes the last words of her spell. There has only been one other as powerful as her, and he died. She laughs, exhilarated at her success. Humans may have won freedom before, but only because the White Lady had abandoned her elves. This time will be different. Darkness sweeps over the land—her doing—and it is so very beautiful.

Her workers are quiet, waiting on her. She closes her eyes, composing the words to unleash her destruction. A bush rustles though there is no wind. Kora ignores it, thinking her plan assured. She will later regret her conceit.
